Today I will focus on a game that easily can decide who in April, what team will be in the playoffs and what team will watch it on TV.
Dallas Mavericks – Utah Jazz
One of the teams that so far is under the radar, are Dallas Mavericks. Five wins streak and third place in the tough Western Conference, after 12 games, but many still see them as an obvious lottery team. Utah on the other hand, as I expected, didn’t continue the amazing form they had after last year’s ASG break – but the line implies that public still views both teams that way.
Carlisle is one of the best coaches in the game the last 15 years – hands down. He morphed last year’s Mavs in to a playoff team and now, with team that is entirely made from leftovers (Pachulia, Villanueva, Evans), players coming off devastating injuries (Parsons, Matthews), youngsters that no one considered as good players (Powell) and players much past their prime (Felton, Williams, Dirk) – manages to stay relevant.
No look at the names – can you find at least one player that lives in the paint? This is a team that is built from mid range shooters and three point shooters and they play against a team who specializes in paint protection.
Match ups wise, this is Jazz nightmare and there is a good reason why Dallas won 8 of the last 9 matches between the teams.
Somehow, Parsons and Matthews returned to form, after very hard injuries, faster than expected, Dirk has more fuel than we thought and Powell actually got game (I honestly had no idea). Hell, Williams and Felton – two of the most “laughed of” point guards in the league – suddenly relevant. They play productive basketball and that’s more than most expected from them.
I don’t know how the line here is almost PK. My line here is -6 and there is no way I will pass such a great line as -2, considering my power ranking and match ups.
Win or lose, Dallas is the right play here.
Dallas -2, 1.95 odds – 7 units play – Pinnacle
