Washington Mystics – Indiana Fever
Indiana Fever won all 4 season meetings against Washington Mystics and owns 9-1 record in last 10 games between these clubs
The Indiana Fever looked like obvious Eastern Conference favorites for most of the regular season. Going into the playoffs, they look more like the walking wounded. A number of injuries to key players will be a primary concern for the top-seeded but reeling Fever as they open the postseason on the road Thursday night against the Washington Mystics, who could also be dealing with a weakened top scorer as they try for their first playoff victory in five years.
The Fever aren’t making any excuses for their lackluster finish, which came with little at stake in the standings, but they’re hoping to quickly shift back into gear with much more on the line.
“It is a change of mentality,” Catchings said, “but I think the last 10 games we really tried to focus into changing into a playoff mentality and even though we have not won all of them, I think going in we are going to have to use the positive things that came out of it. Our bench played more minutes and getting them accustomed to playing, hopefully they will be ready for us.”
Indiana Fever has so much depth on the bench that it will be hard for Mystics to matchup with them during all 40 minutes. I am more than sure that K.Douglas will be at her best again for playoffs while T.Catchings should continue her perfect season. Indiana Fever has better players on all positions and in best of 3 series they can’t allow any mistake. So I expect them to play at their best in Game 1 and win it.
Mystics on other side lost its from when their scoring leader A.Beard got injured and did not find her shooting after injury. Looking into this teams matchup looks like they are moving in different directions. Mystics feel like they already finished season and completed their main task (promoted for playoff after 2 seasons off) while Indiana is just at the start of their way to the WNBA Finals.
Best of 3 series format is very tricky and I expect Indiana to take Game 1 seriously. I expected -4.5 handicap on Indiana today but line opened with -2.5 what looks very tempting for medium stake. I expect Indiana to dominate in Washington this evening and hope they will win comfortably.
Washington won’t be playing at their usual home court at the Verizon Center. They will be playing at the Comcast Center instead. Not a deciding factor for sure but important also because the only real advantage of Washington was their home record 11-6.
Prediction: Washington Mystics 65 – 78 Indiana
